UNITED DENTAL GROUP COMMERCIAL DESIGNED BY T.K.A.
Located in Midtown Manhattan on Broadway, the United Dental Group headquarter is the facade and interior renovation and conversion of a five-story mixed-used building to six-story dental office. A new 1,200 S.F. addition adds five stories to the existing building. A custom fabricated transparent glass panel with customized film inside will be applied on the facade following the irregular pattern of teeth which creates solid and void contrast.
The CEO of UD Group wanted to have a unique and unforgettable lobby design for their building. Derived from a hand-sketch of a TKA designer, the perspective hand sketch is converted to the 3 dimensional space by using three glass planes and light strips. The width of the corridor of the lobby is only 5 feet. Therefore, use of glass walls, the ceiling and the floor with light strips (a metaphor of the perspective sketch lines from the original 2-D sketch), create a spacious illusion of the narrow space. The reflection of the three planes creates a hallucination of unending/continuous corridor, where users cannot define edges of the ceiling, floor, or walls of the lobby.
